Social skills are getting more valuable, not less

The tasks that are hardest to automate are the ones between people.

While machines got better at calculation and content, the labor market quietly rewarded the opposite: the ability to work with, persuade, care for and lead other people. These skills are hard to automate precisely because they depend on trust, presence and accountability, none of which a model can hold. As routine tasks get cheaper, the human ones get relatively more valuable.

  • Jobs requiring high social skills grew strongly since 1980 and pay a premium; tasks needing teamwork and interpersonal interaction have resisted automation the longest.

  • The WEF's 2025 employer survey keeps analytical thinking as the most sought-after core skill toward 2030, with resilience, flexibility and agility rising fast alongside technology skills.

Social skill is not a magic shield. Some interpersonal work is being mediated by software, and 'just be more human' is hollow advice if your field's economics still push toward cost-cutting. Relationships protect tasks, not necessarily paychecks.
